Non-melanoma Skin Treatments

Our approach for treating Squamous/Basal Cell Carcinoma is designed to minimize discomfort and maximize healing

Non-melanoma skin cancers, including Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) and Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC), are the most common forms of skin cancer. Though generally less aggressive than melanoma, it’s important to treat these cancers promptly to prevent them from becoming more serious. Here’s what patients can expect regarding treatment for SCC and BCC at our clinic:

Understanding BCC and SCC: BCC and SCC often develop on sun-exposed areas of the skin and are usually caused by cumulative UV exposure over time. BCCs often appear as open sores, red patches, shiny bumps, or scars. SCCs may present as scaly red patches, open sores, or warty growths; they can be more aggressive than BCCs and sometimes spread to other parts of the body.

What to Expect in our Clinic

When you come to our clinic, we will conduct a thorough examination of any suspicious lesions. If BCC or SCC is suspected, we may perform a biopsy, which is a quick and simple procedure typically done during your initial visit.

Treatment Options: Our treatment approach for BCC and SCC is personalized, depending on the size, depth, and location of the cancer. Options may include:

  • Excisional Surgery: Removing the cancerous tissue and a margin of healthy tissue. This is a straightforward procedure often completed in our clinic.
  • Mohs Surgery: A specialized procedure for larger or more aggressive BCCs and SCCs, where the cancer is removed layer by layer and examined under a microscope until no cancer cells remain.
  • Cryotherapy: Freezing the cancer cells with liquid nitrogen.
  • Topical Treatments: Prescription creams or gels for superficial cancers or as an adjunct to other treatments.
  • Radiation Therapy: For cancers that are difficult to treat surgically or for patients who cannot undergo surgery.
  • Photodynamic Therapy (PDT): Combining a photosensitizing agent with light to destroy cancer cells.

Post-Treatment Care: After your treatment, we will provide detailed care instructions to ensure proper healing. We will schedule follow-up visits to monitor the treated area and address any concerns you may have during your recovery.

Prevention and Follow-Up: Regular follow-up is essential to check for recurrence and new cancers, as having one skin cancer increases your risk of developing another. We also emphasize the importance of skin cancer prevention, including regular self-examinations and protective measures against UV exposure.
